Description
This barn, located approximately 40 meters to the south-west of Whitton Hall, dates from the early 18th century and incorporates materials that are likely from the 17th century. It features a timber frame, primarily covered with weatherboarding, but also includes sections of red brick nogging and a brick plinth. The roof is finished with plain tiles and the structure consists of three framed bays.
The framing is characterized by square panels, with four panels extending from the sole-plate to the wall-plate. On the south-west front, there are two boarded loft doors to the left, a central boarded doorway, and another doorway to the right, along with a boarded loft door in the right-hand gable end. Inside, the bays are separated by square-panelled cross-frames that include short straight corner braces and long straight tension braces. The roof features cambered tie-beam trusses with short raking struts, and it is supported by single staggered purlins with short wind braces.
The barn also contains some reused timbers, indicated by mortices and peg-holes, which likely come from an earlier barn or possibly from the stable block, which itself is an early 18th-century remodelling of a previous timber-framed structure.
