Description

This barn, located immediately south-east of Moat Hall, is likely to date from the 17th century. It is a timber-framed structure with weatherboarding, set upon a brick plinth. The barn has a gable-ended roof covered with corrugated iron sheets. The original rectangular plan is six bays long, with later outshuts added to the front and rear.

The interior wall frame features a midrail, diagonal tension braces, studs, and jowled posts. Curved braces connect to the tie beams. There are slightly cambered collars with clasped side purlins, alongside curved wind braces and common rafters without a ridgeboard. The floor is at the springing level of the tie-beam braces, supported by simple chamfered cross-beams and joists.
