Description
The Ancient House is an early 17th-century house, originally divided into three cottages and now reunited. It is timber framed with colourwashed render and a pantile roof, which was formerly thatched. The house has two storeys and an attic. The front of the house features a 20th-century porch with a hipped roof, containing a panelled door and a three-light casement window. To the left of the porch is blank walling, and to the right a four-light casement and a three-light window with ovolo-moulded mullions to the upper wall. At the first floor, there is a two-light 20th-century window at the far left, and to the right are two lower 17th-century mullioned windows, one of three lights and one originally of four lights. Between these are two arrangements of windows; central two-light 20th-century casements are flanked by two higher, two-light windows of 17th-century date with ovolo-moulded mullions. The right-hand gable end is brick walled, with a lean-to garage in front and two attic lights above. The left gable end has a four-light ground floor casement and two two-light first floor casements. A lean-to extends to the left side, with a two-light ground floor window – all of the fenestration here being from the 20th century. The rear of the house has continuous lean-tos with catslide and pitched roofs and random 20th-century window arrangements. The first floor features two 20th-century windows at the right and a 17th-century window of five lights with ovolo-moulded mullions at the left. The interior reveals chamfered ceiling beams and close studding with jowled wall posts to the ground and first floors.
