Description
This is a late 17th-century cottage located on Vennington Road in Westbury. The structure is timber-framed, set on a painted rubblestone plinth, with rendered infill panels. The left-hand end wall is in painted coursed rubblestone, while the other walls have been partially rebuilt. It has a graded slate roof. The cottage is two bays wide, originally designed with a lobby-entry plan. It features one storey and an attic. An integral brick end stack is located on the right-hand side, and a small roof-light sits centrally.
The south front has a central two-light wooden casement window and a boarded door to the right. Two-light attic casements are set within the gable ends. The right-hand end displays an exposed collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts. There is a one-storey lean-to addition to the left, constructed of painted coursed rubble with a plain tile roof and a boarded door in its return front. To the right, another one-storey timber-framed lean-to has a corrugated asbestos roof and a 20th-century two-light wooden casement on its front.
Inside, the central timber frame features a collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts, single purlins, and a large open fireplace with a chamfered lintel. The cottage’s historical development is documented in C. Ryan's thesis on the evolution of peasant houses in Shropshire.
