Description
Brook Cottage is a cottage, likely dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed of painted coursed sandstone rubble with a slate roof. The cottage originally comprised two rooms. It has two storeys and a two-window front. A large external stone chimney stack is located on the left, with a brick top stage, and an external brick end stack is to the right. The windows are C19 two-light wooden casements. A central boarded door is present, along with a C20 half-glazed gabled porch, which has a door in the return front on the right-hand side. A one-storey lean-to addition is on the left, featuring a segmental-headed two-light casement window to the right and a boarded door with a gabled hood to the left. The interior was not inspected, but it contains a large open fireplace with a chamfered, shallow, triangular-headed lintel. Brook Cottage is a complete and well-preserved example of a small 18th-century cottage. Historical context is provided by C. Ryan's unpublished thesis, "The evolution of the peasant house in Shropshire."
