Description

The Hermitage is a farmhouse that was later used as a school and is now a house. It dates from around 1728, with an extension added around 1736, and likely incorporates a core from the late 16th century. There have been mid to late 19th-century alterations and additions. The building is constructed of red brick, with some sections rebuilt or added in coursed yellow sandstone rubble at the rear, and it has a slate roof. The layout consists of three rooms, with additional 19th-century extensions at the back.

The structure is two storeys tall and has a cellar. It features a dentil brick eaves cornice, an off-centre brick ridge stack to the left, and an integral brick end stack to the right. The windows are segmental-headed wooden casements with louvred shutters, including two first-floor two-light casements to the right and pairs of ground-floor cross-casements flanking a door with six flush panels (the top two are glazed) and panelled reveals, surrounded by a moulded architrave. There is probably an early timber porch with lattice sides, a round archway, a frieze with lozenge decoration, and a triangular pedimented top. To the left, there is likely a slightly later addition or re-fronting, featuring a first-floor two-light casement and a ground-floor cross-casement. At the rear, there are two gabled wings from the 19th century, and to the west, there is probably a stable wing that is a mix of rubble and timber framing from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Inside, the remains of the 16th-century house can be found in the central room, including a chamfered beam, plain joists, a blocked large open fireplace, and a blocked fire window. There are likely timber-framed partition walls from the 18th century upstairs. The staircase rises from the entrance lobby.
