Description

Lower Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century and mid-17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. The building features a rendered timber frame, which has been partly rebuilt and extended with painted and coursed sandstone rubble and brick, topped with a slate roof. It consists of two framed bays aligned north-south and has a projecting gabled area that likely served as a former porch on the east side, along with a later addition to the north.

The farmhouse is two storeys tall. The east front has a plinth to the north, a dentil brick eaves cornice, and an off-centre brick ridge stack to the left, which was rebuilt above the ridge in 20th-century brick. There is also an integral brick end stack to the right. On the left side, the first floor features two 19th-century segmental-headed small-paned wooden casements, while the ground floor has a late 20th-century two-light wooden casement to the left and a segmental-headed six-panelled door (with the top two panels glazed) to the right. The probable former porch is off-centre to the right, displaying a jettied first floor, a jettied gable supported by shaped brackets, and moulded barge boards, with a three-light wooden casement on each floor. The 19th-century section to the right is set back and includes segmental-headed wooden mullioned and transomed windows, with two on the first floor and one on the ground floor.

To the left, there is a 19th-century timber-framed lean-to addition made of brick and stone. Inside, the farmhouse features plain chamfered beams and joists, along with two large open fireplaces. The ground floor of the gabled probable former porch has chamfered joists, beams, and dragon beams with bar stops. Additionally, there is a 19th-century cast iron pump in the lean-to to the south, which has a circular shaft with moulded rings, a fluted top with a splayed spout, a curved handle, and a damaged fluted domed cap.
