Description
Vennington Farmhouse is a mid-to-late 18th-century farmhouse built on a mid-17th-century core, with a mid-to-late 19th-century extension. The original section is likely red brick, but probably has a timber-framed core, while the extension is built of coursed sandstone rubble with red brick dressings. It has a slate roof. Originally a two-room baffle-entry plan, the farmhouse was extended in the 19th century to form an L-shaped layout, including a two-storey and attic addition. Decorative dentil brick eaves run along the top of the building, and it features a large brick ridge stack, positioned slightly to the right, and an external brick end stack to the left, topped with 20th-century brickwork. The front has four bays, with 19th-century segmental-headed, three-light wooden casement windows, except for a two-light wooden casement on the ground floor to the left, and two-light wooden casement windows on the second floor. There are blind windows on the first and second floors in the second bay from the right. A boarded front door is located in the second bay from the right, sheltered by a gabled porch. A ground-floor window on the left-hand side is likely a former doorway, as indicated by straight joints in the brickwork. A single-storey brick lean-to addition is located on the left, with a 20th-century brick porch. A gabled wing was added at the rear in the 19th century. The interior has not been inspected, but is believed to contain features of interest. According to research published in 1979, the farmhouse’s form contributes to the understanding of Shropshire vernacular architecture.
