Description

Causeway Wood Farmhouse is a mid- to late 17th-century farmhouse, with partial rebuilding and an addition dating to the mid- to late 19th century. The original structure is timber framed on a brick plinth with red brick nogging, but has been partially rebuilt in red brick and uncoursed grey sandstone rubble, with a later extension in grey sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, all set beneath plain tile roofs. The building is arranged in an L-shape, comprising 4 framed bays with a subsequent addition.

The farmhouse is one storey and has an attic, featuring three gabled full dormers with 19th-century two-light wooden casements. A brick and stone stack sits behind the ridge, with an external brick and stone end stack to the left, and an integral lateral brick stack to the rear wing. The timber framing consists of tall rectangular panels extending up to the girding beam, incorporating long straight tension braces, and square panels above. The front façade has three windows, featuring 19th-century two- and three-light segmental-headed wooden casements. A segmental-headed boarded door is located between the first and second windows from the left, sheltered by a 20th-century gabled porch.

Inside the right-hand gable end, a collar and cambered tie-beam truss is visible, exhibiting queen struts and V-struts. The interior retains collar and tie-beam trusses with queen struts, chamfered beams and wall-plate with ogee stops, timber-framed cross walls, and two open fireplaces with chamfered lintels, one of which has a depressed arch. A one-storey timber framed and red brick lean-to addition sits to the right, and a gabled full eaves dormer is present at the rear.
