Description

Bowman Hill Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid- to late 17th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of roughly squared and coursed grey sandstone rubble, with some areas rebuilt in red brick, and features a plain tile roof. It has an L-shaped baffle-entry plan and consists of two storeys and an attic over a basement.

The south-east front, which faces the garden, includes a central gabled eaves dormer with a two-light leaded casement and a central brick ridge stack. The front has two windows, featuring glazing bar sashes, with the first-floor windows having exposed flush boxes, and there are a pair of basement windows. To the left, there is a stone lean-to with steps leading up to an altered opening that was formerly round-arched. The rear has a round archway and a parapet.

On the north-west entrance front, there are two tall gabled wings. The central wing has a four-panelled door, while the left wing contains a staircase, which has an altered window. Inside, there is a 17th-century segmental-arched fireplace, two early 19th-century segmental-arched recesses, and early 19th-century panelled internal window shutters. It is likely that the large panel of brick rebuilding on the garden front replaced earlier timber framing.
