Description

Broome Hall Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse with alterations and additions from the 18th and mid-19th centuries. It is constructed of rendered timber frame, largely rebuilt in coursed grey sandstone rubble, with plain tile roofs. The building follows a T-plan, comprising a three-bay range aligned north-west to south-east, with a two-bay addition including a granary to the north-east. It has one storey and an attic, with a semi-basement to the south-east. The main range features a brick ridge stack positioned off-centre to the south-east, an integral brick end stack to the south-east, an integral brick corner stack to the north-west, and an integral stone and brick lateral stack to the rear of the wing. The north-east wing has a gabled brick eaves dormer with a wooden cross-casement. The south-east front has two ground-floor windows: a 16-pane glazing bar sash with a stone lintel to the left, and a 20th-century imitation of a glazing bar sash with a stone lintel to the right. A mid-19th-century four-panelled door is located to the left, sheltered by a brick porch with a stone lintel. The right-hand gable end features a two-light attic casement and a pair of ground-floor boarded doors. There are two lean-to additions at the rear, one of which was formerly a dairy. The gable end to the south-east has a wooden cross-casement. Inside, the main range has chamfered ceiling beams and a large fireplace (mostly filled in) with a chamfered lintel, and another fireplace with a chamfered stone lintel. The original main range was likely a 17th-century baffle-entry house that has been subsequently altered and extended.
