Description
This barn, located approximately 30 metres north of Great Whitmans Farmhouse, dates from the 18th century. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof made of corrugated iron. The barn consists of five bays arranged in a northeast-southwest direction, featuring an aisle on the northwest side only and a midstrey to the southeast. The hardwood frame is jointed and pegged, incorporating some re-used timber. The walls exhibit primary straight bracing, and there are arched braces supporting the arcade plate. The arcade plate and wallplates have face-halved and bladed scarfs. Arched braces are present on the straight tiebeams on either side of the central bay, with bolted knees on the other tiebeams. The roof structure is a joggled butt-purlin design with collars at half-bay intervals. While some of the mainspan rafters are displaced, very few are entirely missing. The footings on the northwest side have been replaced and concreted, while the other footings are original and made of red brick.
