Description

Mill Farmhouse is a house built around 1778, with alterations made in the early 19th century. It has a timber frame, is weatherboarded, and features a facade of red brick laid in Flemish bond, topped with a roof of handmade red clay tiles. The building has a rectangular plan that faces southwest, with an internal stack on the left end and an external stack on the right end. There is an early 19th-century extension at the rear of the right end, creating a catslide roof with the main roof, along with a later lean-to extension along the rest of the rear elevation.

The house is two storeys high. On the ground floor, there are two early 19th-century sash windows with 12 lights each, set in segmental brick arches, and some of the glass is crown glass. The doorway has been converted to a 20th-century casement. The first floor features two similar sash windows and one blocked opening where a former door used to be. The entrance is located in the right return. On the upper storey of the rear elevation, there is one original three-light window with a wrought iron casement and rectangular leading. Inside, there are chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue stops.

Historical records from the court rolls of Le How manor indicate that on 23 March 1778, Roger Cook, a shopkeeper, was granted permission to build a tenement and windmill on this land. By 30 October 1782, he had mortgaged the property, which included the cottage, windmill, outhouses, and other buildings. At that time, the brick facade likely did not exist, nor possibly the right stack.
