Description
The barn at Whittington Farm, located in the farmyard, dates back to the 17th century. It features a timber frame construction with board cladding set into grooves cut into the insides of the panel posts on the front and rear walls. The west gable has been rebuilt in brick with boarded framing above. The roof is tiled. The barn consists of three main structural bays, each subdivided into two panels by a post. Each truss includes an angle-braced tie beam, with a collar supported by four vertical struts and V struts connecting to the principal rafters. There is a cross frame under the east truss, which has large tension braces and a central post off the cill beam. The purlins are wind braced. There are opposing wagon doorways in the east panels of the central structural bay, and the panel framing includes two studs and tension braces.
