Description
Charnes Hall, originally known as Charnes Old Hall, dates from 1650 and later. It features a striking early Georgian facade with Baroque design elements, characterized by plastered walls and stone dressings. The building has rusticated stone quoin pilasters, a moulded stone plinth, and a stringcourse at the first floor. It consists of three storeys on the left and two storeys on the right. The original right-hand wing is two storeys with an attic above the cornice, featuring a central two-window projecting bay that is topped at the rear by a large segmental window beneath a stone dentilled arched pediment. The doorway is framed by coupled stone Tuscan columns that support a cornice hood porch. There are three windows on the sides, with the right-hand side being an addition from 1800. The two-storey left wing, added in 1720, has three windows and matches the style of the original structure. The building has a moulded stone eaves cornice and a slate roof. There is also a modern, yet sympathetic, single-storey wing on the left side that includes a loggia at the front. The interior has been largely remodelled in the mid to late 19th century and features a good staircase and decorated plaster ceilings in the principal rooms.
