Description
24 West Street is a house or pair of houses built in the mid to late 18th century, with alterations and additions made in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The building is made of brick laid in Flemish bond, painted on the main south elevation and rendered on the east elevation, topped with a plain tile roof. It has an L-shaped plan, with the main south range facing West Street and two extensions to the north along the eastern plot boundary.
The main south range has three storeys and two bays facing West Street, topped by a steep pitched roof with a cross-gable that projects northwards. There is a ridge chimney stack on the party wall with Number 26 to the west. The ground floor features a symmetrical shopfront with a central shop window framed by moulded timber surrounds and two timber mullions above a low stall riser. This is flanked by pairs of pilasters that frame half-glazed and panelled doors at either end. The base of the pilasters continues along the stall riser. Above, the first and second floors each have a pair of late 19th-century timber sash windows with stone lintels and stucco cills. The first-floor windows are two-pane sashes, while the smaller second-floor windows have two-over-two glazing. A dentillated brick eaves course runs along the top. The east elevation is partially exposed and features a single-pane fixed window in a plain timber surround. Attached to the front range to the north is a two-storey 19th-century extension with a pitched roof, followed by a single-storey 20th-century extension with a flat roof.
