Description

This is a pair of mid-18th century houses, originally with retail units on the ground floor. The houses are constructed of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a clay pantile roof. Timber windows are a feature.

The building comprises two rectangular blocks of equal width. The northern block has short east and west ends and faces Stodman Street to the north. A southern block adjoins this to the south, with narrower rectangular outbuildings extending from the eastern side of the building (number 41).

The building is two storeys high with an attic. The northern block has a pitched roof with gables facing east and west, while the adjoining southern block has a pitched roof at a right angle to the north block and a gable facing south. Brick chimney stacks rise centrally along the ridge of the north block and towards the south end of the ridge of the south block.

The front elevation features a dentil detail at eaves level. The ground floor is divided into two retail units, each with a recessed glazed door to the east. Number 41, on the east, has a late 19th century wooden shopfront, altered in the 20th century with a new fascia and brick stallriser. Number 42, to the west, has a late 19th century timber shopfront surround with cornice and pilasters, also altered in the 20th century with plate glass and new mullions. The first floor of number 41 has a projecting bay window with a two-over-two sash window. Number 42 has a six-over-six sash window beneath a brick flat-arch lintel. Two raking dormer windows are set into the north roof slope, each containing a six-by-six sash window.
