Description

38, 39 and 40 Stodman Street are three former houses from the 18th century, with the ground floor converted into three retail units in the 20th century.

The building features rusticated stucco render, with timber and brick used for the ground floor shop fronts. All the windows are timber sashes, and the roof is covered with slate. The main part of the building runs parallel to Stodman Street, with a series of two-storey rear extensions that extend to the south. The ground floor is divided into two separate retail units.

The Stodman Street facade has seven bays of sash windows on the first and second floors, situated above two ground floor shop units. The late 20th-century shopfronts at numbers 38 and 39 occupy the eastern and central ground floor units, featuring a shared fascia divided by moulded pilasters. These units have plate glass windows above brick stallrisers. The shop unit at number 40 to the west has a 19th-century shopfront with 20th-century glazing. It includes an off-centre glazed door set back within plate glass windows that have leaded top lights. This shopfront is flanked by fluted Ionic pilasters and topped with an enriched dentillated cornice. Between numbers 39 and 40, there is a close boarded entry door with a decorative cast iron grille above. Lintel bands run between the ground and first floors, and between the first and second floors. The coped parapet wall has seven blank panels aligned with the window bays below. The first four window bays on the first and second floors are six-over-six sashes, while the remaining bays are two-over-two sashes, except for the sixth bay on the second floor, which is blind.
