Description

8 Stodman Street is a dwelling built in the late 18th century, which was later converted into a shop at ground floor level during the 20th century.

The building is made of brick laid in Flemish bond. The ground-floor shopfront features timber with 20th-century plate glass and a glazed door, while the roof is covered with clay pantiles. The structure is square in plan and has three storeys, with a shop unit on the ground floor and a single extension at the rear, leading to a large courtyard.

The ground floor showcases a timber-surround shopfront that extends to the original brick arch of a side passageway, which is now painted. This shopfront includes a mid-20th-century glazed door and overlight on the right, and a single-pane window on the left. Above the segmental arch of the side passage is a cast-iron plate inscribed 'HARSTON'S YARD'. The building has two windows on both the first and second floors, featuring three-over-six sashes on the first floor and three-over-three sashes on the second floor, all set beneath rendered, cut-brick lintels. An additional band of bricks runs beneath the second floor. The exposed red brick is arranged in Flemish bond, and dog tooth brick eaves are found beneath the steeply pitched roof, which has clay pantiles and no surviving chimney stacks.
