Description

19, 19a and 19b Market Place is a former house built in the late 18th century, which was extended to the rear in the early 19th century. In the late 20th century, it was converted into two shops and an office.

The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with flint used for the rear extension, and features a roof made of black-glazed pantiles.

The main elevation facing Market Place is two storeys plus an attic and consists of five bays. In the center of the ground floor, there is a late 20th-century plate glass door with a shallow hood supported by curved brackets. On either side of this door are late 20th-century timber shop fronts designed in a late 19th-century style, both featuring stallrisers, fluted pilasters with plain pedestals, plate glass windows, and shallow fascias. The shop front for number 19 includes a half-glazed door, while number 19a has a plate glass door.

The first floor has five six-over-six unhorned sash windows from the 19th century, all set within 18th-century flush frames and topped with gauged skewback arches. Above this, there is a dentilled eaves cornice. The roof has stone-coped gable ends and features two flat-topped dormers separated by a gabled dormer, all of which contain two-light casements with horizontal glazing bars. Both gable ends exhibit tumbling, and the apex of each gable was rebuilt in the late 20th century when the internal gable-end stacks were removed.
