Description
21 and 23 Market Place is a former inn, now a public house, likely built in the mid-17th century on the site of an earlier coaching inn. The building has undergone later alterations and additions, including a subdivision in the 19th century to create a separate house with a shop.
The structure is made of flint and brick, with the ground floor of number 21 rendered, a pantile roof, and brick chimney stacks. It is two storeys high with a dormer attic and consists of four bays. The three left-hand bays belong to the King’s Arms (number 21) and feature two mid-20th century six-panelled doors in plain surrounds. The door on the right has a 19th-century hood on curved brackets, while the left door has a late-20th century hood. The windows alternate with three-light cross casements, all dating from the mid-20th century. The fourth bay, number 23, on the right has a late-20th century shopfront with a recessed central doorway flanked by plate glass display windows. On the first floor, number 21 has three four-light casements, while number 23 has a four-light casement with a transom, all featuring timber lintels. The gabled roof has four flat-topped dormers, each with two-light casements that have horizontal glazing bars. There are internal gable-end chimney stacks and a central ridge chimney stack, all rebuilt in the 20th century. The west gable end is made of flint with some minor tumbling.
