Description

The stable and hop kiln, located about 15 yards south-east of Laddin Farmhouse, is a storage building or cider house that was enlarged into a hop kiln and stable. It likely dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with extensions added in the mid- to late 19th century. The timber-framed section features brick infill panels and a slate roof that extends over the 19th-century stable addition at the south-east end. The building has a rectangular plan oriented roughly north-west to south-east and consists of two levels.

The north elevation includes a central 19th-century ledged door, a loft door to the right above a blocked pegged door-frame, and exposed framing that is three panels high from the cill to the wall-plate. The south elevation, made of brick, has segmental heads at the gable end, with a stable door to the right of a window and a central five-pane window for the loft. The hop kiln, likely from the mid- to late 19th century, is attached at the west end. It features a sandstone rubble first stage, a brick upper stage, and a slate pyramidal roof, with a square plan and a small window with a brick surround and segmental head in the north elevation. Additionally, there is a late 19th-century two-storey brick extension attached to the south of the hop kiln. The stable and hop kiln are prominently positioned on the approach to Laddin Farmhouse and are included for their group value.
