Description
Kilkington Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century, although it has earlier origins. It has undergone alterations in the 18th century and later. The building features a timber-frame structure with sandstone rubble and brick, some of which is rendered. It has a hipped tiled roof with brick and sandstone stacks and is designed in a T-plan with a cross-wing at the south-west end.
The farmhouse has a cellar and two storeys in the cross-wing, while the main range has one storey and an attic. The south-east elevation displays a rendered gable top to the left, featuring a 2-light mid-20th century casement window on the first floor and a 3-light casement window on the ground floor. The brick main range includes a 4-light early 20th century casement window in a gabled dormer. The ground floor has two 3-light casement windows, the right one likely dating from the early 19th century, set in cambered heads. The entrance is located immediately to the right of the gable front, leading to a mid-19th century brick gabled porch with a two-centred head, fanlight, and an 8-panelled contemporary door.
The north-east gable is made of brick and features a central stable door with a loft door above. Inside, there is a ground floor room with heavy oak ceiling beams that have a V-section. The newel staircase, possibly from the 17th or 18th century, has oak treads that wind around a massive oak post about one foot square. The interior also boasts extensive oak floorboards.
