Description
The Staunton on Wye War Memorial is a First World War memorial that also commemorates those who served in the Second World War. It is located in an elevated position beside the A438 at its junction with Church Road, to the south-east of the village.
The memorial consists of a plain column made of polished granite, topped with an orb, and is set on a square, rough-hewn stone plinth that has a two-stepped square base. The main inscription in incised lettering on the front (south-east) face of the plinth reads "PEACE." A bronze plaque on the south-west face honors "THE MEN OF THE PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914–1919" and lists 14 names, concluding with "R.I.P." Another bronze plaque on the north-east face commemorates "THOSE WHO FELL IN THE 1939–45 WAR," listing 4 names.
The memorial is situated on a paved area within an enclosure marked by painted cast-iron railings and a pedestrian gate. Access from the roadside is provided by four steps, which were repaired in the early 21st century.
