Description
The Staunton on Wye School, built between 1859 and 1860 by Fulljames and Waller for the Jarvis Educational Foundation, is a notable example of Collegiate Tudor Gothic architecture. Constructed from English bond red brick with stone dressings, it features clay plain tile roofs with stone-coped gables and large brick axial stacks. The building is two storeys high with an attic and has a nearly symmetrical 15-bay south front. This façade includes a prominent central entrance tower with steps leading up to a Gothic pointed arch doorway, set-offs, a clock in a Gothic panel, and a squat spire. Flanking the central tower are gables and projecting schoolrooms that contain large three-light Gothic windows in their gable ends. The stone mullion-transom windows are adorned with labels. On the west side, there is another tower featuring a pointed arch doorway, bell-openings, and a pyramidal roof. The rear elevation is gabled and includes a cloister on the right. The interior has not been inspected.
