Description
Great Bilbo is a farmhouse dating from the 15th century, with extensions and alterations made during the late 16th or 17th century, along with minor changes in the 20th century. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and has a corrugated asbestos roof. The original 15th-century wing runs east to west, while a later wing runs north to south, attached to the south side.
The east front features a central projecting gabled porch, with gable-end stacks on the later cross-wing and an axial stack on the earlier wing. The earlier wing is a single storey with an attic, while the later wing has two storeys and attics. On the east front, there are 4-light diamond mullioned windows on either side of the central porch on the upper floor. To the left, there is a 19th-century casement window, and to the right, a 5-light diamond mullioned window with a transom and a square-headed label. A continuous pentice runs to the left and right of the first floor, flanking the porch, which has a segmental-headed doorway. The inner doorway has a moulded square-headed surround with a segmental head, and features a heavy battened door with decorative strap hinges.
Inside the 15th-century wing, there are two cruck trusses, though they have been mutilated at the base. The later wing retains good chamfered and moulded ceiling beams. There are plank-and-muntin panelled partitions on the ground and first floors, with segmental-headed doorways. A large stone winder staircase is located at the south gable end, with another staircase in the north gable end.
