Description

Burrowhayes Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, which was enlarged or partly rebuilt in the late 18th to early 19th century and altered in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of red sandstone random rubble and features triple ridge tiles, overhanging eaves, and external stone stacks at the west gable end, center, and southeast gable end. It has an L-plan layout with three cells and a cross passage that has been rebuilt and enlarged.

The south front of the farmhouse is one and a half storeys high and showcases late 18th to early 19th century casements. There are two 2-light dormers to the left of the lateral stack and one to the right, along with two small 20th-century windows above the entrance. The cross gable end is unlit. On the ground floor, there are two 2-light windows to the left and two similar windows to the right of an inserted doorway. To the left of the lateral stack is a 4-light ogee-headed wooden window frame, featuring foliage decoration in the spandrels and initials WS flanking the central mullion. There is a fine moulded ogee-headed door frame to the right, without stops to the jambs, leading to a 19th-century plank door under a triple ridge tiled pentice porch that extends left over a window. To the right return, there are two bays, including a canted bay on the ground floor with a half-glazed door to the right.

The interior has not been seen but is reported to contain a finely moulded 12-panel compartment ceiling, which has been cut by a resited cross passage partition when the stairs were inserted, along with four pairs of jointed cruck trusses.
