Description
Horner Mill is a disused corn mill from the mid-19th century, likely built on the site of an earlier structure. It features red sandstone random rubble and a steeply pitched double-span pantiled roof, with some glazed pantiles. There is a separately roofed lower wing on the left and a tall stone stack at the rear. The building has a parallel range with an overshot waterwheel at the west end and a two-bay wing at the east end, situated on a slope that descends to the west.
The main block is three stories high, while the wing is two stories. It has 19th-century leaded wooden casements, some of which were in poor condition at the time of the survey in July 1984. The left side features two 2-light windows, and on the ground floor, there is a segmental-headed 3-light window to the right of a stable door. The second floor of the main block has two 3-light windows, and there is a catslide roof over a projecting bay to the right. The first floor has two 3-light windows beneath a pantiled pentice roof supported by corbelled projections, along with a segmental-headed loft opening. The ground floor includes a 5-light window in a pantiled projection, a door to the right, and double doors in a projection with weatherboarding on top, along with a projecting plinth that creates a platform in front of the mill. The right return shows the remains of the overshot wheel. Although the interior was not seen, it is said to contain remnants of mid-19th-century shaft machinery and the waterwheel machine.
