Description
The John Mailes Monument is a chest tomb located about 6 yards south-south-east of the south-east corner of the south aisle of the Church of St George. It commemorates John Mailes, a surgeon who died in 1809. The monument is made of finely cut sandstone and features a moulded base and capping, with the capping being hipped. The end panels are bombé and resemble continuous corner balusters, while the sides have incised panels with quadrant corners and paterae. This monument is part of a close group with the Butt, Harris, and Williams monuments.
