Description

The Church of St George is a parish church with origins in the 12th century, incorporating a chancel dating back to that time. The nave and aisles were constructed around 1300, with the west tower added in the late 13th century. The church underwent restoration in 1848 and 1883, during which the south porch was added and the south aisle extended eastwards. It is built of sandstone rubble with sandstone dressings, and has tiled roofs.

The west tower has three stages, featuring diagonal buttresses with offsets on the north-west and south-west corners. It has chamfered lancet windows on the north and south sides of the second stage, and larger, roll-moulded lancets on each side of the top stage. A double string course runs beneath the plain parapet, with waterspouts on the north-west and south sides. Newel lights are present on the south side of the west end, with a corbel head on the string course separating the second and third stages.

The north aisle has a restored trefoil-headed single-light west window, three restored windows of two lights each to the north, a priest’s door, and a chamfered lancet at the east end. The east window is restored, with three lights featuring trefoiled heads and cinquefoil tracery. A restored single-light window with a trefoiled head is on the south side, and a diagonal buttress with offsets is located at the south-east corner. The south aisle contains 19th-century lancet windows in the eastern portion, a 15th-century three-light trefoiled window to the east of the porch, and a pair of 19th-century lancets under a relieving arch at the west end.

A 19th-century oak south porch has arch-braces from corner posts to a cambered tie-beam supporting a crown post, with panelled sides containing cinquefoiled openings above. The south doorway has a 13th-century two-centred chamfered arch and jambs, with a label and stops.

Inside, a continuous wagon roof covers the nave and chancel. Trussed rafter roofs with curved braces to the collars are found in the north and south aisles. A deeply splayed 12th-century window separates the east end of the north aisle from the chancel. The north arcade is restored, while the south arcade is 19th-century, with the eastern piers octagonal and the rest cylindrical. The north-west arch is semi-circular, and the north-east arch is two-centred. The chancel piscina has a multi-foiled head and a quatrefoil drain. C19 screens enclose the chancel on three sides. A diapered pulpit and a contemporary font, with four columns supporting a square basin adorned with trefoil-headed panels, are also present. The font is covered by a pyramidal cover with cut-out quatrefoils, a chain, and pulley. The tower arch is two-centred with double chamfers, with cluster shafts on corbels, one featuring a head. Two coffin lids, one potentially 13th-century and the other 14th-century, are located in the north aisle, and a cushion capital is positioned on a shaft at the west side of the south doorway.
