Description
The barn and shelter shed, located about 40 yards south-east of Lower Welson Farmhouse, are likely from the 17th century and were altered in the mid-19th century. The structures are timber-framed and weatherboarded, resting on a rubble base, with some areas clad in corrugated metal and a corrugated metal roof. The barn consists of three framed bays arranged north to south, featuring a central wagon bay with opposing cart entries and double doors. Inside, the wall-frame includes three rows of panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate, with short straight braces in the lower outer corners of the upper outer panels. The roof has a collar and tie-beam end truss with struts, while another truss has been altered to include a king-post, along with two intermediate tie-beam trusses that have raking struts. The shelter shed is located at the north end and wraps around the north-west side, constructed from rubble with a corrugated metal roof. It has three bays plus two additional bays, open to the north and west on circular rubble piers, some of which have been partly rebuilt in brick. A double doorway is positioned at the east end. Together, the barn and shelter shed enclose the farmyard to the east and flank the main approach to Lower Welson Farmhouse, contributing to their group value.
