Description
Barley Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, which has been altered and extended in the mid-20th century. It features a timber frame with painted brick infill on a rubble base, some rubble walling, and a slate roof that has been renewed on the east side. The building has a central brick ridge stack and is arranged in two framed bays aligned north to south, with a central chimney creating a baffle-entry. The cottage has two storeys and the framing consists of three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with collar and tie-beam trusses supported by struts.
On the east front elevation, there are a 2-light and a 3-light casement window on the ground floor, along with a 2-light casement window on the first floor. A central 20th-century gabled timber porch features a 20th-century door with a transom light and a glazed door. At the north end, there is a rubble lean-to outshut with an entrance that has a lean-to canopy supported by straight brackets, leading to a 20th-century door at its east end. The rear of the cottage has 20th-century single-storey additions. Inside, the north bay has stop-chamfered main ceiling beams.
