Description
Lower Welson Farmhouse is a farmhouse with origins in the 17th century, substantially altered and extended in the mid- to late 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of rubble with plain tiled roofs and 19th-century brick stacks. Originally built with an L-shaped layout, it features wings extending south and east, with a further wing added in the 19th century to form an angle. The south front elevation of the main range (and the added east wing) has two ground-floor and two first-floor windows, each with two lights and cambered heads. A gabled porch with chamfered timber posts stands before the main entrance, where a 19th-century door has four flush panels and a cambered head. The gable end of the south wing has a double doorway on the ground floor and two irregularly sized and spaced two-light casement windows on the first floor, all with concrete lintels. The interior retains some original moulded ceiling beams with shaped brackets, and a late 17th-century staircase with turned balusters and moulded handrails.
