Description
This building is a barn and an attached cow shelter located about 45 yards west of Hellens. It is probably from the late 18th century, with an early 19th-century extension for the cow shelter. The structure is timber-framed, featuring weatherboarding and a tiled roof, while the cow shelter has a pantiled roof. The barn has six bays and is aligned roughly north to south, with a five-bay cow shelter attached to the north end.
On the east elevation, there are full-height opposed cart entries in the third bay from the right, along with an early 19th-century gabled weatherboarded two-storey projection to the right of the cart entry and a lean-to addition to the left. Inside, the barn features pegged triple angle strut trusses and wall-frames that are two panels high, designed for weatherboarding. The cow shelter has four oak posts supporting its open east side and pegged raking strut trusses. This building is part of the farmyard complex at Hellens, which includes other structures such as a barn, cider house, stables, stable block, and wainhouse.
