Description
This barn and cow shelter, located about 60 yards north-west of Monnington Court, is likely from the late 18th century. It features a timber frame with weatherboards, a corrugated iron roof for the barn, and a stone slate roof for the cow shelter. The barn consists of seven bays and is aligned roughly north-west to south-west, with two lean-to extensions on the south side that are not included in this description. Access to the barn is through full-height ledged doors located in the third bay from the east. The frame has rectangular full-height panels for weatherboarding and tension braces on the side walls. Inside, there are double raking struts from the tie-beams, and a straight tension brace that defines the threshing floor is crossed diagonally by a second pair, creating a lattice effect. The cow shelter is L-shaped, with two bays and twelve open sides supported by oak posts on stone plinths, and it features a full-length 18th-century rack on the rear wall. This structure is included for its group value.
