Description

This former smithy, located about 20 yards south-south-east of Bridge Lane Farmhouse, is a farm outbuilding that may have originally served as a cartshed or wainhouse. It dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. The structure features a timber frame set on a stone plinth, with a weatherboarded north gable and east wall, a mid-19th century brick south gable, and a mostly stone west wall. The roof is plain tiled.

On the exterior, the north gable displays an exposed frame with a jowelled corner post and a truss that includes three queen struts beneath a collar with 'v' struts. There is a ledged door from the 17th or 18th century to the left, alongside brick and stone walling. The east wall features a double-leaved door from the early 20th century.

Inside, the building has two pairs of purlins that are tenoned to two trusses. The southern truss has two queen post struts, although the central strut is missing, and it includes carpenter's marks, stave holes under the collar, and stud mortises beneath the tie. The northern truss has short raking struts above the collar. The north gable also contains a truss with three queen posts, 'v' struts above the collar, and plastered woven lathe infill. The wall plate and jowelled posts have intermediary studs and are pegged with a mid-rail, suggesting that the front may have been open at one time.
