Description
The Smithy is a farmhouse and former smithy, now a house, dating from the early 17th century, with a smithy added in the mid- to late 18th century, along with later additions and alterations. The building is timber-framed with painted brick infill and a painted sandstone plinth, topped with slate roofs. It features a hall range of one and a half bays, with a flush single-bay gabled cross-wing to the right and a lower smithy added to the left in the 18th century. The structure has two storeys with an attic in the cross-wing.
The framing consists of small square panels, four from the cill to the wall-plate, including in the cross-wing, which has long straight tension braces and a hewn jetty that continues around to the right and rear. There is a plain moulded bressumer and carved corner brackets. The gable features a queen-strut truss with upper and lower collars and a boarded hatch. The former smithy has larger square panels, three from the cill to the wall-plate, and includes three-light 20th-century casements, one on each floor of the hall range and on each floor of the gable. A 20th-century plank door is located to the right of the hall range. There is a red brick stack behind the ridge to the right of the hall range and an integral end stack at the rear of the cross-wing. The former smithy has a three-light 20th-century casement on the ground floor and a gabled eaves dormer. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
