Description
Shrewsbury Lodge is a gate lodge dating to around 1892, designed by Aston Webb as part of the Yeaton Peverey estate. It is constructed of snecked red sandstone ashlar, with a partly timber-framed first floor featuring closely-spaced imposts and a rail. The roof is slate, and the building has an irregular L-plan in a Domestic Revival style.
The south-east front has a moulded wooden cornice to the timber-framed first floor on the left, alongside a jettied gable with shallow ogee-moulded cambered tie-beams, run-out stops, and moulded brackets. It also features barge boards with a finial, and a parapeted gable end to the right with stone coping. Stone ridge and integral end stacks are present, both with moulded cornices. A central first-floor wooden 2-light casement sits above a ground-floor leaded 2-light chamfered mullioned stone window, with a dripstone carried around the corner. A full-height canted stone bay is located to the right, incorporating a string course, moulded cornice, and a battlemented parapet with shaped merlons and moulded coping; this bay contains 1-, 2-, and 1-light chamfered mullioned stone windows, each with a dripstone. A central boarded door has strap hinges, chamfered reveals, and a moulded elliptical arch with a returned hoodmould. The left-hand gable end has a first-floor 3-light wooden mullioned and transomed casement above a ground-floor 2-light chamfered mullioned stone window, also with a dripstone. The right-hand return front has a string course and cornice that continues around from the bay, incorporating a ground-floor chamfered one-light window to the left. A rear wing features a double-chamfered plinth, string course, moulded cornice, and parapet with moulded coping, which is ramped up to the corners and has a globe finial at the gable apex. The gable end of the wing contains a first-floor 2-light chamfered mullioned window and a ground-floor one-light chamfered window, with a further ground-floor 2-light chamfered mullioned window to the side. The interior has not been inspected. Shrewsbury Lodge is one of a pair of lodges for Yeaton Peverey, both also designed by Aston Webb. The drive from Shrewsbury Lodge and the associated gateway are now disused. It is also known as North Lodge, Yeaton Lodge, and The Lodge.
