Description

Plumtree Cottage is a farmhouse that likely dates from the mid-17th century, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed with a timber frame and red brick infill, mostly covered in roughcast, and has a 20th-century slate roof. The building features a three-unit baffle-entry plan with raised eaves and stands two storeys tall.

On the upper floor, there are three 19th-century casement windows positioned directly below the eaves. The ground floor has three windows as well, with two on the left and one on the right of a boarded door that has a glazed panel to the left of centre. A red brick ridge stack is located immediately to the right, with its top rebuilt in 19th-century brick. To the left, there is a prominent stepped external end stack that has dentilled capping, along with red brick lean-tos attached to the front and rear, the latter featuring a fire window.

The framing includes square panels and a tie beam, which are fragmentarily exposed on the left gable end and also at the rear where they are not concealed by a long 19th-century brick lean-to. The original wall plate is detectable beneath the render on the front. There is a single-storey 19th-century red brick outbuilding attached to the end stack, which has a segmental-headed boarded door and window, along with an internal end stack.

The interior could not be inspected during the resurvey in February 1987, but it was noted to have a blocked doorway directly in front of the stack, which is likely to be of interest.
