Description
Forge Cottage, No. 5, and the attached former smithy are now two cottages that date from the 18th century and early 19th century. The building is constructed of brick, with flint and brick dressing, except for the brick end walls and scantling timber in the gables. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure, with a single-storey, two-bay smithy extending forward and to the right. The windows are 20th-century two and three-light casements with camber head openings, and there are similar casements above the left two bays. The right bay, added later, is made of flint and has been rebuilt in brick on the ground floor, featuring an 18th-century six-pane door and a casement with a two-light casement above. The roof is half-hipped with an outshot to the rear and has a large stack positioned behind the ridge to the right of center. The attached smithy at the right corner has a flint front with brick bands and three brick dressings for the openings, which are mostly blocked except for a small casement on the left. The smithy also has a half-hipped roof with a projecting stack located centrally on the slope of the roof.
