Description
Snig's End Farm is a farmstead that likely dates from the mid-19th century. It features brickwork in English garden wall bond with a stone plinth specifically for the barn, and it has a tiled roof. The layout is 'L'-shaped, consisting of a two-bay cartshed with a granary above on the right, and a three-unit barn of the same height, with the rest being a low, single-storey structure.
From the yard, there are stone steps leading to the granary door on the right return. The main facade includes a cartshed opening on the right with a flat timber lintel and a brick-on-edge course above it, supported by a central timber post on a stone base. There are also stone hinge blocks that once held gates, which are now removed. Above this opening is a single-light window with iron bars and a flat stone lintel. The eaves feature a fascia to the open rafters.
To the left, there is a wide double door opening flanked by large openings to the eaves, all set within cambered brick arches and featuring brick grille panels. Internally, there is a low brick wall with a timber cap to the left of the threshing floor. The roof has a wide central bay with two narrow bays at each end, supported by queen-post trusses with metal bolts, two pairs of purlins, a plank ridge, and braces connecting the wall plate to the lower purlin over the threshing floor.
To the left, set back, is a three-bay open-fronted cowhouse with timber posts at the front, king-post trusses with iron bolts, and one pair of purlins. Each truss has an internal buttress against the back wall. There is a similar five-bay cowhouse at right angles on the left, with stone paving remaining but no fittings. The corner is walled off as a feed room, with a door at the back of each cowhouse. The roof is hipped over the corner.
In the return wing to the left, there are two three-bay sections with a brick front, each featuring a boarded door and a two-light window that rises to the wall plate with a stone window sill. The right unit is a stable with part of a rack still in place, a door at the front leading to the left room, which is likely for feed preparation, and a door at the rear leading to another three-bay open cowhouse, with the front partly built up in the late 20th century. Beyond this are three pigsties and a shed with a yard, featuring stone copings on the yard walls and a random rubble stone end yard wall.
The farmstead is an important feature along Gloucester Road and is listed primarily for its group value with the nearby house and Chartist cottages.
