Description

The Cottage is a small house dating to 1848, designed by F. O’Connor for the National Co-operative Land Company. It is constructed of painted brickwork with a stone plinth and a slate roof. The house has three bays, with a single-and-a-half rooms deep, and a single storey. The central bay slightly projects and is topped with a gable. A glazed front door is set one stone step up, and single-light wooden casement windows flank it. Two-light casement windows are located in the wings, all with flat, rubbed brick arches, and all windows appear to be original. A plain string course runs along the centre, with slightly projecting brick eaves and verge courses. A quatrefoil ventilator is positioned in the gable, and shaped corbels support verge rafters at the front. Brick chimneys extend from the end gables and the rear centre. Original lean-to rear rooms are present. The Cottage represents a good example, seemingly very little altered, of Chartist cottages, originally accompanied by a plot of 2 or 3 acres. It is listed for its historical and sociological significance and forms a group with other Chartist cottages.
