Description
Rylonby is a small house built in 1848 for the National Co-operative Land Company by F. O'Connor, with later alterations. It features monk bond brickwork on a stone plinth with a chamfered top and a slate roof. The front has three bays, with two parallel single-storey rear wings. The centre bay projects slightly and has a gable above. There is a half-glazed front door that is accessed by one stone step, with narrow wooden casements on each side. The wings contain 2-light casements, all featuring rubbed brick arches. The windows and door were renewed in the late 20th century but are designed to match the original pattern. A plain brick string course runs along the centre, with a stone quatrefoil ventilator above it. There is a slightly projecting brick course at the verge and at the eaves of the wings on either side. The centre gable verge has a plain rafter supported by shaped corbels at the front, and there are brick chimneys on the end gables only. Originally, the house was set within a 4-acre plot. It is listed mainly for its historical and sociological significance and forms a group with other Chartist cottages.
