Description

This is a small house dating from 1848, built for the National Co-operative Land Company by F. O’Connor. It was altered and extended in the 20th century. The house is built with monk bond brickwork above a chamfered-top stone plinth, and has a slate roof. It has a three-bay front and is two rooms deep, with a single storey.

The central bay slightly projects and features a half-glazed door set one stone step up, with small marginal lights to the sides and two flush panels below. The reveals are rendered, and there's a flat brick arch above the door. Tall, single-light windows are situated on either side of the door, with small panes and flat brick arches. A plain brick string course runs along the base of the gable, above which is a stone quatrefoil ventilator. A projecting brick course runs along the verge, featuring a plain verge rafter supported by shaped corbels at the front.

Mid-20th century three-light casement windows with soldier arches are set within the bays to either side. A slightly projecting brick eaves course runs along the top. Brick chimneys are located on the end gables and in the centre of the rear elevation. The house is listed primarily for its historical and sociological significance, and as part of a group with the nearby school and other Chartist cottages. Originally, it was set within a three-acre plot.
