Description
Greenway is a small house built in 1848 for the National Co-operative Land Company by F. O'Connor, with alterations made in the 20th century. The building features a stone plinth and slightly irregular Flemish bond brickwork, topped with a slate roof. It has a three-bay front and is one room deep, with a parallel rear extension that is single storey. The top of the plinth is chamfered. The center bay projects slightly and has a gable above; there is a late 20th-century half-glazed door accessed by one stone step, with no lintel above it. There are narrow late 20th-century windows on each side, topped with a rubbed brick arch. A plain string course and a projecting verge course run along the gable, which also features a stone quatrefoil ventilator and plain verge rafters supported by shaped corbels. Each wing has two-light late 20th-century casements, also with rubbed brick arches. The eaves brickwork slightly projects, and there are brick chimneys on the end gables and in the center at the rear. The proportions of the openings are likely unaltered from their original state. The house was originally set on a 2-acre plot and is listed mainly for its historical and sociological significance, forming a group with other Chartist cottages.
