Description

This is a small house built in 1848 for the National Co-operative Land Company by F. O’Connor. Later alterations have been made. The exterior is characterised by slightly rough render on brickwork, a black-painted plinth, and a slate roof. It is three bays wide and one room deep, with a later gabled extension along the rear.

The central bay slightly projects forward and has a gable above it. A late 20th-century gabled porch with a half-glazed door leads to the front, accessed by two stone steps. Single-light casement windows are found in the porch returns and in each side of the main central bay. A plain string course runs along the foot of the gable, above which is a quatrefoil ventilator. The roof has plain verge rafters supported by shaped corbels at the foot, topped by a timber apex finial. Late 20th-century two-light casement windows are located in each of the end bays. Brick gable chimneys are situated at each end of the building.

Originally, the property included a two-acre plot. The proportions of the window openings and the front elevation have remained unchanged. The building is listed primarily for its historical and sociological significance, as it forms a group with other Chartist cottages.
