Description

The Second Cottage to the north of the Prince of Wales Public House is a small house built in 1848 for the National Co-operative Land Company by F. O'Connor, with later extensions. It features Flemish bond brickwork on a stone plinth and a slate roof, with a double Roman clay tile roof on one rear extension. The front has three bays and is 1½ rooms deep on the left, with a three-window wing at right angles on the right side, which consists of two builds. All parts of the cottage are single storey.

The centre bay projects slightly and has a gable above it, with four flush panels on the front door, which is accessed by one stone step. There are narrow window openings on each side of the door and wider windows in each wing, all with rendered reveals and flat rubbed brick arches. The windows are boarded over. A plain brick string course runs along the foot of the gable, with a stone quatrefoil ventilator above it and a slightly projecting brick course at the verge. The verge rafter is supported by shaped corbels at the front, and there are double projecting brick courses at the eaves on each side. A brick chimney is located on the ridge at the right gable only. The right part of the gable of the rear wing also projects. The cottage is said to retain its original cupboards internally as of 1976. It was originally part of a 2-acre plot and is considered a good example of a Chartist cottage, listed primarily for its historical and sociological significance. It forms a group with Oaklands and other Chartist cottages.
