Description

Wayside Cottage is a house that dates from the 15th or early 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It features brick-nogged timber-framing on the gable to the south, with painted English garden wall bond brickwork. The framing has been partially renewed with brick and stone on the front, and it has a slate roof.

The house has three bays and is one room deep, standing at one and a half storeys. The entrance front has a wall rebuilt in stone at the left end, with a brick chimney above the eaves. The framed section on the right has narrow panels. There is a boarded door with a gabled wooden porch roof supported by angle brackets. To the right, the wall has been rebuilt in brick, with stone at the bottom, and features a three-light mid-20th century metal casement window. There is another boarded door to the right, with a porch similar to the one on the left.

The framing on the right has been replaced with brickwork in the lower part of the wall, with some stone at the foot, and a two-light casement window above. There is a gabled dormer left of centre with a two-light casement and a half-hipped roof, along with a chimney behind the ridge to the right of centre. An external brick chimney is located on the right end, with tiled offsets. Inside, there are large chamfers on the ceiling beams in the right room, and two elbow cruck trusses with complete wallplate ties, one pair of purlins, and a square ridge.
