Description
South View is a cottage built in 1848 by F. O'Connor for the National Co-operative Land Company. It has been altered and enlarged in the late 20th century. The exterior features plain render on stone walls, set on a rendered plinth, and a slate roof. The cottage has a three-room front and is one room deep, with a large single-storey rear extension added in the late 20th century.
The garden front faces south and includes late 20th-century small pane windows and a door. The centre room slightly projects and has rendered quoins, as does the left wing. Access is via a fully-glazed door that is reached by three concrete steps, with tall casements on either side and a trefoil vent in the gable above. The verge rafters are plain, and there are two-light casements in the wings. The cottage has gable and centre rear chimneys, with the former slightly corbelled out. The large rear extension matches the height of the original structure but is not of special interest.
South View is part of a Chartist settlement and is listed mainly for its sociological and historical significance, originally associated with a two-acre holding.
