Description

This is a cottage dating from 1848, constructed by F.O'Connor for the National Co-operative Land Company, with later alterations. It is built of monk bond brickwork with a stone plinth and a slate roof. The cottage is single-storey, with a three-room front, one room deep, and a lean-to extension to the rear. The front of the building features rendered reveals and flat, rubbed brick arches over all openings. The central room projects slightly and includes a late 20th-century fully-glazed door, accessed by three steps, with 8-pane, single-light casement windows on either side. A plain string course runs along the front, and the gable has a projecting verge featuring a quatrefoil vent and verge rafters supported by consoles. Two-light casement windows with small panes are found in the wings, and there is a double oversailing eaves course. The cottage has centre rear and gable chimneys, although the top of the right gable chimney has been removed. The building has undergone relatively few alterations since its construction and originally included a 2-acre holding. It is listed primarily for its historical and sociological importance, as it forms a group with other Chartist cottages.
